Connecting Utahs Ski Resorts Via Tunnels, Cable Car Or???
The state of Utah (home to the greatest snow on earth) is looking into connecting seven of of it’s ski resorts in an effort to make it easier for skiers (tourists with money) to get from one resort to another in a matter of minutes. A tunnel would allow visitors to the area to get from Snowbird to Deer Valley quickly and easily without worry of snow mountain passes or avalanches.
Currently driving from one resort to another can take upwards of an hour (or more if conditions are poor) even though the resorts are no more than a mile and a half away from each other. These resorts offer tons of skiing acres – (over 12,000) twice as much as either Vail or Beaver Creek or Whistler and Blackcomb in Canada.
The Wasatch mountain range offers some of the greatest skiing in the world, each resort has plenty to offer and they are all different in their own way. Deer Valley is the tourist resort of the area with fine amenities and accomidations while Snowbird is the resort for serious powder hounds looking for nothing but the best (and deepest) snow over challenging runs. With the edition of a tunnel vacations could easily travel between Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude - with the Park City and Deer Valley resorts on the east side of the Wasatch range.
The state could simply connect the various resorts with some strategically placed high speed quad chairs they are contemplating a more ambition fix. Several tunnels over the next decade, however the expense will be significant – my gut tells me this is a pipe dream. If it does happen however it could bring the area up to par with Colorado or the Tahoe area (with the addition of some swanky hotels). Time will tell.
